Weirton, W.Va. (WTRF) – The U.S. Department of Energy has just put out a new video series documenting clean energy projects and those working on them, and they’re highlighting Weirton, West Virginia

Long gone are the days of Weirton Steel employing 13,000 local residents, but a lot of work is being done to turn the economic tide.

Form Energy broke ground on their new facility in May of 2023, and that project is expected to bring more than 700 jobs once the plant is at full capacity.

They will manufacture iron air batteries, which can store energy created from solar and wind sources.

“So when we got out of high school we got jobs, good paying jobs and had a whole career. 30, 40 years at the mill, and we bought our homes, and raised our families, sent our kids to college; all because of the money we made here in the mill. And now that it’s shut down we’re happy that Form energy has come in and hopefully that starts a new business cycle for this town.”

EDMUND DIBACCO, FORMER WEIRTON STEEL WORKER

Form Energy is set to begin operations sometime around September of this year.
