As it gears up for expansion, Greentown Labs promoted one of its longtime lieutenants to lead its founding location.
Julia Travaglini is Greentown Labs’ new head of the organization’s Somerville incubator, Greentown Labs said Thursday.
In an interview, Travaglini said she started in the newly-created role in November, reporting directly to Greentown Labs CEO Georgina Campbell Flatter, or “Georgie.” She’s focusing on operations, looking closing at the needs of the 145 startups based on site.
Her inaugural role was brought to life by Campbell Flatter’s vision “for the next chapter of growth for Greentown,” Travaglini said.
“As the next chapter evolves, it could look like for Greentown to have additional sites down the road in the future,” Travaglini said.
What’s next for Greentown Labs in 2026
The self-described largest climatech incubator in North America currently has two sites — the Boston area and Houston, where it opened in 2021.
Campbell Flatter “really needs to be thinking at the top, top level of the organization,” Travaglini continued. “The vision is having someone, day to day, leading the operations, the ecosystem engagement.”
Travaglini’s new role has a parallel one in Houston. A new head of Greentown Labs’ Houston incubator, Lawson Gow, started in July last year.
She said that no specific new locations are being evaluated right now.
Campbell Flatter was appointed CEO approximately one year ago, heading over from nonprofit TomorrowNow.org.
Her arrival marked the end of a period of change at Greentown Labs, after the incubator was left without a permanent leader for several months following the departure of Kevin Knobloch in mid 2024.
Contrary to Campbell Flatter, Travaglini is an insider. She spent more than ten years with Greentown Labs, most recently as senior vice president of marketing and communications.
In her new role, Travaglini looks forward to continue accelerating Greentown Labs’ startups, help them achieve their milestones, growth and success, she said. Greentown Labs’ Boston currently employs 14 full-time staffers and five part-timers, and is not currently hiring for her previous positions in marketing and communications, she said.
